The objective of Core Curriculum 1322 is to help students become chemically literate in an increasingly chemical world. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of chemistry, with applications to the environment, including nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry, toxicology, and air pollution. The importance of quantitative relationships is emphasized, as are links to disciplines outside science, such as history, literature, politics, and economics.
These web pages have been designed by the Learning Center staff to assist students with their study of Core Chemistry.
Chemistry is the study of matter. Atoms and molecules are basic building blocks of matter that are essential to the understanding and solution of many chemical problems. This section discusses matter and its classifications.
Atoms were once thought to be indivisible. In fact, they are comprised of subatomic particles that play specific roles in atomic structure. This section discusses key subatomic particles and their properties.
Matter undergoes chemical and physical changes. A physical change does not alter the composition of the substance undergoing the change, whereas the substance involved in a chemical change undergoes a change in its composition. Chemical changes are depicted by processes called reactions, which can be as simple as reacting gaseous hydrogen with gaseous oxygen to produce liquid water, or as complex as refining oil to produce chemicals that can be used to synthesize plastics. This section will discuss the fundamentals of chemical reactions.
